Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students that require specialized support services have been a part of the American fabric for decades. A rise in students who are primarily English Language Learners have challenged many educators who are seeking ways to meet the needs of this population. Finding properly trained staff who are bilingual and bicultural in the student’s native language, as well as trained in how these issues affect academic performance can be a daunting task.
Bilingual Special Education Services of Connecticut seeks to provide school districts with a bilingual team of clinicians who are bilingual/ bicultural in their respective backgrounds, and seasoned professionals certified in bilingual and multicultural issues. Factors affecting the academic performance of CLD students require a pupil personnel team that understands these unique challenges. All educators desire the success of every student. Thus, our goal is to collaborate with school teams to address the needs of their CDL students in a manner that is equitable and comprehensive, portraying the various layers that make up this student population.
Using a strength-based approach our aim is to help educators identify ways the student assessed learns best and to identify instructional points that ensure optimal performance. Our psycho-educational evaluations are geared in the comprehensive integration of educational history, language proficiency, bilingual academic performance, cognitive functioning, socio-emotional functioning, and personal strengths and weaknesses. We take pride in the diversity of our team and their vast experience in supporting the needs of CLD students with exceptionalities.
